How many returning vets have disabilities?

  • Again, it’s difficult to get an exact number because there are different definitions of disability.
  • About 1/3 of returning vets will have at least one of the signature disabilities (Tanielan & Jaycox, 2008).
  • Overall, nearly a third (29.6%, 3.5 million) of the 12 million civilian veterans ages 21-64 in the US report having a disability.
  • Among returning veterans, the rate of disability is higher.
